Technical Sound Research
This chart is from an assignment I worked on in class. I studies the different types of sounds used in movies. I used what I learned in my film such as synchronous sound when Viktor calls Jeremyah earlier in the film.
Technical element of sound | Example | Analyze its role in the production of meaning |
Synchronous sound | An alarm clock going off | It signifies the start of the movie, top of the morning. |
Asynchronous sound | Lightning from a storm | The camera can use a close shot of the characters face to show their nervousness and what there scared of without having to show what the character is looking at. |
Voiceover | The internal monologue in American Psycho | Voice over acts as a narrator to the audience. |
Dialogue and mode of address | Harry Potter speaking with Dumbledore | The spoken words of the characteristics within the diegesis. |
Sound bridge | Alarm clock playing from dream into a person waking up | It keeps a consistent sound as the film transitions from one spot to another. |
Sound effects | Floorboards creaking in a horror movie | Integrates the audience into the movie and develops emotion with the connotation of the creaking sound. |
Sound motif | Superman | Instruments play usually showing his arrival. |
Sound perspective | Standing next to a semi-truck | The engine is loud so other noise such as a friend saying something to the main character may be faintly heard due to the distance difference between the truck next to the main character and the friend across the street. |
Sound mixing | Fast and Furious | Scene mixes dialogue, sounds of the engine revving, and explosions all in one action scene. |
Ambient sound | Distant Hum of traffic in a busy city scene | Recreates the natural noise of scene through a sense of realism. |
Score | Star Wars theme | Designed to work in harmony with the film |
Theme | Sponge Bob | Musical composition written for a specific film |
Stings | Invincible Title Screen | Cutting to a title slide right before the title of the show is said within the show. |
